Hey everyone, I wanted to talk about something very powerful that I have discovered. I've been studying shyness for a long time now, trying to find any way to relieve the terrible pain that it causes, and I have found some very interesting things, that may or may not have been discussed here.
Two words, Stop Performing! These two words have changed my life, and I'll explain further. The problem with shy people is that we think way too much, so when we have an upcoming event, we tend to think ourselves into a state of pure fear, destroying any chance to function properly. So again the problem is we live inside our heads instead of in the real world. We think of every possible thing that can go wrong, like shaking hands, losing breath, stumbling over words, passing out etc, and this makes life impossible. So we must obviously get out of our heads. The way you do this is to stop performing. This means, whenever possible, you will go with the flow and never plan anything, such as a speech, or any activity that you know will put you in a state of panic. This doesn't mean you shouldn't grow by facing your fears, but I am speaking on a day to day basis to help minimize those extreme fears, that just don't have to be there.
The reason we are so shy tends to be a great importance we place on ourselves. We think we're the center of the universe, and everyone's eyes are on us. This comes from a deep knowing that we have a power inside of us that wants to come out, but it terrifies us and so we run for cover. It's interesting that your body will try to shut down when it feels threatened, and tries to make you leave a certain situation. For example, I have loved doing magic tricks all my life, but my hands always shake when I'm trying to entertain people. Again this is my body saying Get Out Of There! But now I'm able to do magic tricks because I no longer plan for them ahead of time. Have you ever been asked to do something like singing a song, playing an instrument, or giving a speech without any warning? You may be surprised by your amazing courage when there's no time to think those nasty thoughts before you really perform.
Get in touch with your body and discover all the feelings that come with your fears. If for instance someone asks you to do something, and you know it's going to make you panic, simply and politely decline the offer. But if in that moment you feel a strong power rise up in you, that can absolutely do anything, go for it! As long as you have no time to think before you enter an act, your inner power will take over and you'll be amazed by your confidence and energy, in that very present moment where all is well. Later on they may ask you to do it again, but be very aware of your body, because now you've had time to think, and we know what happens with that.
So try it out, and remember to take your power. Never let anyone tell you what to do, and you choose when the time is right to really perform. It takes so much pressure off and gives you the chance to enjoy your talents with others. Any thoughts?
