I am kind of surprised the lack of comments on this. Maybe nobody really cares.

I think it's obvious. Government intrusion is the debate of Terrorism vs Freedom. I have heard things like recording emails would've prevented tragedies like 7/7, but you just know the government is using it as an excuse to invade our lives because it evokes an emotional response. It's a disgusting thing to do. It's a sad fact of life but we will get attacked. Spying on us is merely an extension of that.
We live in a world governed by fear and idiots. Complaining isn't getting us anywhere so all we can do is work around the government's communistic regime.
The UK government will soon start recording and keeping everyone's emails and online activity, Facebook, Twitter, etcetera. If I use a VPN, I can stop them doing that. Proving it's a futile war. The very same government is due to start blocking pornography for every household in the UK unless you join a 'pervert register' and opt-in. It's pathetic. But again, a VPN will get around this block as will software readily available.
All they're doing is papering over the cracks. How much further can this go? Say we get attacked again, what are they gonna do then? Home inspections? ID cards? Certainly gonna happen in the next ten years. Which I will refuse to get, jail me all you want, it won't change my mind. It's a problem but you can't crush the freedom of the people you're trying to protect. It's futile.
Whatever the solution, freedom and democracy must be protected even if it means we'll lose a few lives. They are casualties of war but the only alternative is making the entire population casualties of war, and that's pathetic.
Governments of the world need to get a grip before we lose everything that makes us free.

After all the recent revelations, I am pretty sure what they are doing has little to do with protecting people and more for monetary gain.
Yes there are some people killed in attacks but look at how many people are killed in gun violence every year and that is just completely ignored. Why is that? The gov seems to care nothing about random people just shooting each other over drugs and dumb stuff.
What about these cases of people being locked in a house for years and nobody finding out about them? What about missing people?
If they eliminate all the porn in the UK, it just makes it easier to collect people's info rather than having to filter all the porn. I bet that is the real motive behind it.

I think this has been going on for much longer than we realize, ever since the 90's I think.
But I also think there are many motivations and purposes for the massive data gathering, not just spying on citizens. Certainly, I believe the NSA and CIA are doing that, but data collecting is a neutral activity itself. What the govt chooses to do with it is the question of concern.

Yeah the Patriot act which was passed a few years ago in America is another similar act carried out by the US Government.

Grrr, but wasn't that a response to rooting out the rotten terrorists attacking people here, and finding the ones who might help them in the future? I know I know! Employ more dogs! We can sniff out anyone! I will vote for whoever increases dogs' rights and functions in the workforce along with you humans! We love humans! Oh, by the way, see that tennis ball over there? Would someone throw it for me?
