Well I do. I hate the way they are used to sell any product in TV commercials and I hate the way they always cast the best looking people for TV shows. In fact I think i just hate good looking people in general! Of course these people haven't done anything wrong but i hate the way that only such people are used to show off clothes and appear in commercials and so forth. I think their reasoning is that by showing a model wearing a certain aftershave the viewer who isnt quite as good looking will think they can be like the model by buying this aftershave which they don't need. Well i for one would be more impressed by and average or below average looking guy appearing in one of these adverts, then i could atleast relate to it in some way.
There is one advert that especially annoys me, but it will be hard to describe to anyone who hasnt seen it, but ill do my best. There is this perfect looking model (you know the type) advertising this fragerence for men. In the voice over he talks about how he doesnt like to live a flashy lifestyle (probably in an attempt to make the viewers relate to him) and then he says
"Spend hours on my looks? Not my style"
As if this guy hasnt been in hours of make-up for this advert and is if he doesnt always look perfect anyway. I literally shout at the TV at this point normally, "You dont have to spend hours on your looks if you look like THAT". If i spent a whole weekend "on my looks" i wouldnt look half as good as this guy so it really annoys me. My point is thus, if the guy hadnt been a perfect looking model and looked more like my standard of looks then i would say "fair point, maybe he doesnt spend hours on his looks, i can relate to this guy a bit perhaps". I find these type of adverts very, very patrnonizing. Yes there is jealousy involved but my point still stands, why are models almost always used?
This rant (and it truly is a rant) is quite clearly aimed at men models as opposed to women but I'm sure women get just as annoyed as me about female models.
Now tell me what are your views, and did you understand much of what the hell i was talking about because i think i kind of went off on one and it might not have made much sense to anyone else.

;D You are right, mate. It is a sad world we live in, not so much that models are used for adverts, I think, but that I bet a lot of men do go in for some wishful thinking that if only they used that aftershave, drove that car, or drank that brand of beer, their life would somehow be better. And a lot of dopey women have twisted standards when it comes to what men should be like as a result. (Not that men aren't just as bad.)
In one of the SA books I read, the author was getting ready for a talk show with a famous actor. The author, who often used compliments to start conversations, said to the actor (roughly), "Nice hair." "It's a piece," he replied. "Well, your teeth look fabulous," she tried again. "They're capped," he said. "You have a lovely strong chin," she tried one last time. "Implant," he said.
Her point (of this true story) was that a lot of "perfect" looking people had a lot of help.

You are right on....about models being errrr..rather perfect in the advertising world. Companies that advertise want models, TV stars, movie stars, etc. to be seen using this or that! ;D Personally, I buy a product for what it is and not who is pushing it. I could care less if some so-called famous person says to use a certain product, but I'm probably a bit different in my outlook on advertising of products. Take Playboy magazine for instance.....the girls\women seen in it are rather pretty. In fact, in the center-fold most of those women have been "airbrushed" to make them almost perfect. Then when guys go to date a woman and she doesn't look like one of these Playboy girls, they wonder why not? It takes all kinds of people to make the world go around. Whatever suits your fancy is who you should be friends with. There are more average or less than average people. Remember..."beauty is in the eye of the beholder".....who you consider to be beautiful I could consider to be average. Whatever works is what I'm most interested in and a good personality is my upmost quality I look for.

GRRRRRRRR Why do you think models look like that without breaking a sweat? I always thought most of them spent significant amounts of time in the gym and controlling their diets(well, maybe not all the really skinny ones--a lot of them probably just don't eat).

I know that and I tell my brain every day, but it just wont listen . Most of them are propably living on fags and water anyhow.

It's just that my self esteem is none ecsistent, and I often feel that I'm ugly. I've latly tryed to become more confident, just so I wont feel bad about my self all the time. I was bullied all through school, teachers pet, nerd, to skinny to fat etc. So my self image is not of the best.

Yeah I"m not really up on the self esteem stuff either. the only thing any one ever thought of me was that I was anorexic. I'm 18 and I weigh 95 pounds!

Oh, models! God, I cannot stand the sight of them. Even the male models I don't find romotely attractive...too clean cut and beefy (a little beef is good...too much is too much)
greedy_goddess- you might want to get some professional help with the anorexia. Been there, done it, get it over with as soon as you can. I'm serious now.

No, it's not that I'm anorexic because I'm not. It'sd just that I'm so skinny every one thinks I am. I mean I can eat and eat and I'll gain like two pounds at the most, but I just lose it again.

I find the way to feel better about this is to think about who you fancy - if you're like me they probably won't be 'perfect' at all. The person IRL I find most attractive right now (married, dammit!) is in in her early forties and rather plump, but has a very lovely face and a smile that melts me. On the box or the screen, I like allsorts, in fact the generic Hollywood pneumatic blondes turn me off bigtime.
In other words, the gap between some ideal dreamt up by advertisers and what people actually go for is immense, and I think most people like and are reassured by imperfections.
In fact perfection is about the most boring thing there is.
