Ever noticed how the music, movies and books only get worse with time? The youths used to be more polite, girls more beautiful and even the weather more clement ... Or it's just us? Unwilling to admit qualities of something 'not our generation'? I can see this in myself too. Where are the computer games heading? Fallout rules! What of the once tranquil forests now plagued by tourists (myself including)... I believe there's decent music around nowadays some easily better than that of yesterday. But of course, it all depends on personal preference. Just try to see the better side of things.

Jarous- I completely agree. In the 50s-60s, pretty much the only venue you had for music was radio so the bands had no choice but to sound good, no gimmicks (still, you had corny teeny boppers and puppy love songs on top 40, but it's always been that way and at least they could carry a tune). In the 80s, MTV became a prominent source for new music so talent scouts focused more on looks than talent or songwriting ability. Now what you have is the internet as the main source for new bands and artists so album and singles charts and MTV are becoming unreliable surveys for today's musical climate. Good music has always been here and it always will be. It just changes venues every decade or so

There are some good bands around. My favorite being Pearl Jam. Though, most of what I like tends to fall into the 60s 70s eras. Rory Gallagher, Led Zeppelin, Tony Joe White, Pink Floyd, Uriah Heep, The Who. We need a rock n roll revolution! Agreed, we are in dire need of some new rock bands! Screw this god-awful 'Garage/HipHop' rubbish (*prepares for backlash from avid Garage fans*) I have to say with only a couple of exceptions, Maroon 5 and The Rasmus are the only two decent bands around today. 'Dead Letters' is one of the best albums I've heard in...well, ever!

Good Music is all around us! All you have to do is open your ears and seek it out. I hear people saying that there are no more good bands or albums but they are everywhere. The only difference is that money-making pop music has taken over most radio stations and reaches the top of the charts and is just generally heard more often than decent music. There is as much decent music as ever, its inconceivable that all of a sudden good music would just stop being made. The White Stripes, The Strokes, Radiohead, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, these are all superb bands that are quite famous aswell. But its not just rock music that is still going strong (if you look for it) but all types of music. If you just make that little bit of effort because it takes more effort than before you will find what you are looking for.

The only singer/songwriter out of the 90`s that i love to listen to is Fiona Apple. Her music comforts me. If you like Fiona Apple, pick up Rachael Yamagata's Happenstance. She has an amazing voice that reminds me of Fiona.

An excellent article on the issues being discussed here from the Sydney Morning Herald. The areticle come from a poll they recently conducted which showed massive differences in how different age groups voted. The article explains how different generations feel that the music of their youth was the best and often dismiss new music. On a personal note let me say I am chuffed that Radiohead came top of the poll by a large margin with OK Computer being voted the best album and Paranoid Android being boted best song (i voted for them ;D) here is the adress www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/07/09/1089000343833.html?oneclick=true

I must admit the majority of the music they pump out into the charts today is manufactured crap but I'm putting in a recommendation that you listen to Jet, Franz Ferdinand or The Strokes (to name a few).

Well, I think there's still some good music around, but everyone has different musical tastes. I have personally always been into listening to the 60's and 70's (which is kind of weird for my age (16) I think). I love the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Jim Croce, James Taylor, and Bread to name a few. I just find this kind of music relaxing. I also kind of like some of the 80's music. I love some of Michael Jackson's songs from back then...lol. As for today's music, I like Avril Lavigne and Christina Aguilera (despite her look, imo she has an amazing voice). And I do like some of Sarah McLachlan's songs. (I know someone mentioned her on here.) And I like some others, but for the most part I only like a few songs of a lot of groups and wouldn't find buying their actual cd worth it. Anyway, I'm mostly into classic rock, soft rock, rock, and easy listening. I can listen to most music, but some of it I have absolutely got to be in the mood for (like country). I don't like heavy metal at all. I'm not much of a rap person either, but if someone else is listening to it, then I'm okay. Anyway, I think I've said enough...lol.

i agree.. there is some good music around still.. especially depending on how you interpret certain bands.. but in general there isn't much good music anymore. There are too many out there who just do it to try to become popular and famous and make a lot of money and think they make theirselves better than everybody by becomming celebrities... not meaning to aim towards in group in particular here but i seem to notice this mostly in the Pop genre.

Like some people said, good music is still around, but definitely not much as it used to be. I still listened to today's music, but sometimes listen to old school like Stevie Wonder, Prince and such.

There’s loads of great music out there, you’ve just got to look more towards underground. Mainstream market has always been perpetual rubbish pedalled by executives. All the good stuff’s out there; bands that only get airplay on pirate stations or dedicated forums these days.
I loved the whole metal explosion of the 80`s – Spawned some great bands, exciting sounds. Fashion travels round in circles they say & different phases pop back.I agree,We definitely need a rock`n roll revolution though.Should be due for one soon ;D
