Don't get offended but somehow I think shy people are more likely to get depressed and consider or even commit suicide (I don't). If I am wrong, please, show me my error.
So I have this question I feel you may be knowledgeable enough to answer:
I have read a WHO report on world-wide suicide rates. It provides the data but nearly no discussion or interpretation of the results. How do you explain: (1)Men commit 80% of the suicides (worldwide; overall country suicide rate is always higher for males than females - with single exception - (2)China). (3)The highest suicide rate is experienced in former USSR (Russia, Eastern Europe).

I see what you're saying. While in middle in high school, I was depressed and considered suicide. Thankfully I was too afraid of the pain to go through with it. I'm okay with things now, but I wouldn't be suprised if others like myself contemplated suicide.

I must ask [no, you fool, don't ask! Too late...], aren't there painless ways to ... err, like overdose?
I don't think you was afraid of the pain. Probably you just saw the pointlessness of the action. Life is struggle, but worth struggling no matter the odds. In the end we all die so why rush it?

I was afraid of pain yeah. But I also did see there was no point to it. As for a painless way of overdose, I'm not too sure.
From what I hear though , lethal injection is painless during executions. But whatever drug they use probably isn't available to the average person.

From some strange (or morbid) reason you made me laugh at the thought of lethal injections not available to common people. Just imagine it - all with warnings to keep out of children's reach, directions of use, precautions (!!!) on supermarket shelves...
Ahh, I'd better be silent now.

I thought of doing more than once in highschool. I'm just happy they didn't have any of those suicide booths around like they do on Futurama. Or I might have. lol

1)Men commit 80% of the suicides (worldwide; overall country suicide rate is always higher for males than females - with single exception - (2)China).
Men commit suicide more often, but women attempt it more. Women often choose methods that might fail (razor blades, pills, etc.) while men are more likely to use guns to finish the job.

Thanks Nicole, Do you mean women plan to fail or that they are less 'dexterous' (honestly I can't imagine how a determined suicidal with a razor blade in hand can't get the job done)? Also I don't think men have such a great access to guns. There has to be another explanation.
Just talking about razor blades and firearms in this fashion sends shivers down my spine. Perhaps this thread should have never started...

i'm afraid of dying
i think that is my biggest hold-back...
and i guess despite hating my life... i like life...if that makes sense...i always have a sense of hope that things will get better...i don't want to die...i want to experience life...
anyway...what are the statistics on people who commit suicide that have known someone who has committed suicide?
i have known of 2 guys who have. one of them was my highschool crush actually. it crushed me. i had heard stories of him going through abuse in his house and other "gossip" about him. nothing is ever a reason to do it, but it seemed like he had it bad, if you know what i mean? the second guy i knew of, nobody to this day, knows why he done it. not even a clue why he done it. this guy seemed like he had so much going for him too, it baffles everyone.
that statistic with the men compared to women is interesting.
anyway it is such a morbid topic...and i hope nobody here ever goes through with it, no matter how bad things get. i remember a poster saying he was going to do it. i am genuinely still thinking about this person, and i hope they did not go through it.
p.s. i know i said i contemplate it sometimes, but i would never have the guts to do it, so no need to worry about me.

It doesn't surprise me that the highest suicide rate is in the former Soviet Union. I have read books and posts by people quite familiar with those countries, and the system absolutely crushed the men. Well, communism crushed everyone, but because men are expected to be somewhat ambitious, hard-working, risk-takers, etc. and because communism penalised those qualities, men suffered more. The rate of alcoholism is also extremely high among FSU men, and they have little hope of a decent future in the foreseeable future. There are lots of FSU women looking for husbands abroad for these reasons.
(On the forums dealing with such things, lots of shy guys are clearly considering foreign brides. Lots of other shy guys go abroad because it is so easy to get a g/f there.)

Also I don't think men have such a great access to guns. There has to be another explanation. Actually, in some countries it is quite easy to get your hands at firearms. Like in the US. Men may commit suicide more because there may be more of a pressure on them to perform. A strange idea, I know. But think of it: traditional men are supposed to act tough and have a degree of machoness. Among men and with women. They have to keep up that act for some respect, otherwise they can be perceived as "lesser man" or a softie. Men are less open and bottle up more. They often don't have people around who they would trust with their issues, as man. Women are seen as empathic, gentle, open and so on. I think women can come of easier with mental instability, because it is "ok" for women to be emotional". Just a theory I have thought about suicide, but I never tried it serious. Weird as it is, I was thinking about all my possesions and didn't felt like that others would get my stuff after my death. But the main thing is that I did not really belief that suicide would be a solution and I did not had the guts to do it. And you're right Nicole: most people don't know how to use the razor in suicide, thankfully.

I sometimes consider suicide as an option..and I did try to OD once before. Since I experinced my failed attempt I don't think I'll ever go through with another attempt. After I had taken all the pills and thought I was going to die I had decided I wanted to live.Thankfully it wasn't too late and I got to see how life can get better (even though it's still far from perfect). With suicide though I beileve it should be up to a person if they want to end thier life...but really I urge everyone to at least try as much as they can to improve thier life first. To anyone thinking about suicide, try all the thearpy types etc first, you can allways kill yourself later and with death there is no turning back.
