The one thing I don't like about plastic bags is when they're filled with heavy things the handles seem to really push into my skin.

I wish more stores did offer paper bags; I need something to wear on my head when I go out in public. You could be the unknown shy guy ;D

We have to pay for plastic bags here for about the last four years- most stores have long life cloth bags that people reuse which also helps to cut down on paper bages- it's strange but it actually made a noticable change on the streets which always seemed to be covered in plastic bags- now all we have to do is clean up the macdonalds cartons that are everywhere, and the vomit and dog shit...... and the place might look nice Anyway using stuff made from plastic is just prolonging all those wonderful dictators in the middle east who are sitting on the oil- if we didn't buy oil from them they'd all be swinging from lampposts in about a week. Even the trip to your local shop can change the world.....

Even the trip to your local shop can change the world..... Hehehehe. My old grocery store, Albertsons, used to offer rebates for people who brought in old bags for re-use. For every old bag we used for their groceries, the customer got 10 cents off their bill. This could produce a good bit in savings for them. They still had paper when people wanted it, but largely we put everything in plastic. Of course, plastic is somewhat filmsy too, but proper double bagging of heavy items can be done with efficiency and produce customer satisfaction.

Paper, mostly because I'm sentimental and a nostalgia freak. I like the look and feel and smell of paper, and the memories of going to the store when I was young. There is also a certain art to the technique in packing a paper bag that is lost in packing plastic ones. It was cool trying to fit, on request, all of a customer's groceries into a single paper bag. It was like playing a game of tetris with cans, boxes, produce and bread. As much fun as a person can have working in a grocery store.

you can get biodegradable plastice, which saves the environment and saves the trees but really people should take their own bags with them, that's the best way.

Paper. I find planes made out of plastic don't fly very far.

I've never seen a supermarket offer paper bags before. But I'd always choose plastic anyway, they're easier to stuff full and carry. And also they're easier to re-use for other things, and my cats like to play with them and make them rustle. Mine too..but my little one also loves paper bags, he loves to sit in them and then be dragged around on the floor by the handle. The grocery stores I go to don't even offer paper anymore, unless you ask for it. Plastic is much easier IMO and the stores have a thing where you can drop them off and they recycle them.

the only thing i don't like about paper is if there is something very cold in the bag, which causes condensation that moistens and weakens the bag and then everything falls out of the bottom when you pick it up.

paper for frozen foods (holds in the cold better) & plastic for everything else
