Paper is superior because of its greater carrying capacity. Best is to wrap your paper bag in a plastic one to get the strong handles and have the best of both worlds (the paper bags with handles tear easily). QED.

Grrrrrrr, i used to hate it when the old ladies would demand that we put their stuff in paper-in-plastic bags. Oh well, whatever. I think most stores are going to plastic because box per box, it's much cheaper to order and use. Businesses are obessed with cutting costs, you know.

The stores in my area haven't had paper bags probably since the early 80s. Everything is plastic. Of course (and I know this wasn't a category included in the "debate"), there are some nice cloth environment grocery bags around that have 2 handles so they're easy to carry. I used to use them, but I slacked off and haven't used them for awhile.

That was my dad's "beef" about the plastic bags when the stores started using them for packing groceries.

I prefer paper 2 plastic anyday as I think we waste and throw away so much plastic its such a vast waste of materials.
Supermarkets annoy me a lot when they automatically give out carrier bags 4 little items. Ive even had an assistant wanting 2 pack a packet of paracetamols in a carrier bag - what a waste!
I wish we could have paper carriers in the UK.
