it's annoying when friends who are overweight or trying to lose weight give you a hard time bc you are naturally thin. i use to live with this one girl..a roommate and at every meal she would keep track of what i was eating. if i went into the fridge for salad she would actually get mad and ask me why i was trying to lose weight. i like salad!!!!!!!!
i LIKE to eat healthy foods any day over junk.. i just dont have much of a sweet tooth!!!
god that's just annoying

I wonder how people can be so incredibly defensive about a condition they put themselves in. Apparently, thin people aren't bullying fat people enough. They're everywhere and its a bit repulsive. Morbidly obese, not mildly. I don't know why she'd be angry with you...would she rather you eat an entire bag of chips in front of her?

I've been overweight since I was a child. I've tried the diets, and while they took off a few pounds, that was about as far as it got. the battle of the bulge is a lifetime battle.
I was kind of liking your posts, Nelo, until this one. The harshness sounds out of character for you.

You should consider yourself extremely LUCKY that you don’t have and never have had a problem with your weight or with battling a junk food addiction, though. As a person who needs to lose weight myself, I highly ADMIRE those who have never had a problem with food and eat healthily without a second thought about it. It’s wonderful that you don’t have your weight to worry about. And actually, I’d much prefer to room with someone who eats healthily….then hopefully that lifestyle would more easily rub off onto me! I have had an incident similar to yours happen to me, though. When I was living at the dorms, my roommate and I decided to start making healthier food choices. So one day we were at the student center for lunch with a couple of other people…and we both ordered a salad. Our other friend (who LOVES cooking and food in general) just made a rude, snide comment…as though she was annoyed by us for choosing something healthier than what she was eating. I was thinking, ‘WTF?!’ Friends should want their friends to be healthy! It completely pissed me off. So, in that sense, I do know where you’re coming from. Anyway, you should not let anyone’s comments about your healthy eating get to you…because it’s only them with the problems. I do think it’s odd, though…that she should complain about your healthy eating. I could see someone being annoyed by a naturally thin person eating junk food all the time, but that’s not the case here. Overweight people tend to be the ones who others will ‘monitor’ and comment to all the time about what they are eating….which can be really frustrating. Perhaps if you did that to her, or made other such comments, or if you let on how easy it is for you to eat healthy all the time, then maybe that could cause a bit of resentment on her side. If not, then she’s just obviously jealous and not a good person to be around. Fat people are bullying thin people nowadays? Just scoff back at her. That won't solve any problems. If you all we did was criticize one another, everyone would develop more problems...more self-esteem issues and in this case, definitely more body image issues. --------------- Our society as a whole, though, needs to eat more healthily. Recess/P.E. needs to be considered important in schools. Parents should limit tv/computer/video game time for kids and actually try spending quality time with them. Fast food joints should be done away with. And more affordable healthy food choices should be made available. And perhaps most importantly, people need to learn to cope with their problems in a positive way. People need to learn to care about themselves. Case in point here....a lot could be done to help with the obesity epidemic. yeah...anyway.... the battle of the bulge is a lifetime battle. Absolutely true for many people. |

She ALWAYS makes an excuse before she eats anything . . . usually, "I didn't have lunch today!" . . . (yeah right, we know that you don't get to be obese by skipping meals). She also comments on MY weight, saying "Let's face it, you're not skinny" and "There's no way your ass would fit in those!" (I weight 115!) </rant> |

Some things I just can't stand...some people battle it, most don't. Maybe its just because I have an extremely small appetite and its very likely I have something else wrong with me. I've been dealing with depression for a long time and its probably a good condition to be in to loose weight but no one's going to suggest depressants.
Shyness is one thing, a deeply ingrained mental inhibition but having no will power at all just bothers me.

(I weight 115!) </rant> hmm...I think you may have misinterpreted what I said a bit. I meant overweight people are often monitored by people. But yes...it can go both ways. Except, what I'm getting at mostly, is that it's an overgeneralization to think that all overweight people will criticize thin/healthy people. People do make excuses for what they do.....but the question is 'WHY do they make those excuses?' Most everyone makes excuses in one way or another to get out of something they don't want to do or to hide something that they're ashamed of and don't want to admit. And actually....overweight people can skip meals. It's most likely that they just eat more later. Or go through binge phases where they eat a crap ton of food. Does anyone watch Oprah anymore? She just had a show a couple of days ago involving a group of very overweight teens. They were trying to get to the real reasons of why they were overweight...what caused them to eat so much. One of the girls said that sometimes she'll go a day without eating because she doesn't think she deserves it. At first I was like...hmm...right. But now I don't really doubt that. It's just most likely that she overeats most every other day. And take a look at Oprah herself. She is known for her weight to go up and down over the years. Why is that? She has all the people in the world to be helping her. Emotional eating...and/or binge or compulsive eating (binge eating is considered an eating disorder).....they are not easy to deal with. It's something someone can struggle with their whole life. It's like.....telling an alcoholic to have one drink. One drink...and it's like...eh, I can have at least one more and then stop. Right...then 2 drinks leads to 3 and so on. Overeating can be the same exact thing. Except you can't avoid to eat all together. You're faced with your 'drug' day in and day out. Temptations are everywhere. ...some people battle it, most don't. Considering all the overweight people there are nowadays, not to mention all the eating disorders that exist, I think you have that statement turned around. It just so happens that many people overeat when they are depressed. So seriously, when it comes to depression....it goes both ways. Some people feel they can't eat when depressed while others just want to eat more. It's a vicious cycle. Pure willpower just doesn't last. There's always something that occurs down the line to make a person feel defeated and that feeling can cause one to easily slip back into old ways. It's only learning how to properly deal with the bad feelings that will help a person to succeed. Yes...I know, I know the formula is simple: eat less; exercise. But if it's really soo simple how come so many people are overweight? I think it's safe to say that most overweight people do not like being overweight and are disgusted (or at least displeased) with themselves. It's obvious that there are other reasons that come into play. But they are still people. And they are not all the same. And so should not be considered as so. It just seem lately....with several posts I've seen here in the past few days....that lots of people are on this I-hate-fat-people wagon. I'm not saying they should be let off the hook or that it's okay to make up excuses for being overweight as a way in justifying that it's okay to stay that way...and I'm not really defending their behavior as in...it's okay, it's not a problem. Because it IS indeed a problem...a big problem....but the way some people who don't understand it view them is just soo wrong. And that doesn't help either. ----- Alright, I've had enough of this issue. If people still don't get what I'm getting at then...I guess there's nothing more I can say that will make any difference. I'll just be beating a dead horse... |

i tend to be very tolerant in real life (or appear so on the outside). i didn't let my roommate know that her comments made me uncomfortable. like she sees me putting hot sauce on my food. btw, i LOVE hot sauce and i put it on everything. so she was like do you eat hot sauce to lose weight..?
and the way she says it is kind of like she's annoyed with me...
i just said no i just like it...and changed the subject...
im the type of person who avoids conflict and would not think about bringing up the issue of weight when i knew that it was a big issue that she was dealing with.
i know from watching her how hard it is to lose weight. she had an eating schedule and she would go to the gym.
i would see her eating healthy food but a few days later she would eat alot of junk food not being able to resist and she would tell us that she had a sweet tooth and would not do it againn..not that we asked her but it's something she spoke about often..what she ate and what her weight goals were etc.
ive got issues of my own. not weight issues but other issues about my appearance etc. so, i can be sympathetic in that sense..i know what it's like to want to look a certain way and the struggles of achieving it.
what i noticed about her though is that she is a very calm person and she use to spend most of her days laying on her bed. she use to go to the gym almost everyday but when she was at home it was mostly that she was in bed reading her notes etc
whereas, i didn't ever go to the gym but im not a calm person..i tend to be always on edge or something..i think alot of my energy is burned by worrying about this or that...
so our weight not be just about the conscious decisions we make about what to eat or not..
if you have a huge cravings for sweet things that would make it difficult..i don't think ive a very good will power sometimes..i do things that i regret later..(a little too often..) so if i had a sweet tooth i could very well be overweight..luckily i don't
