More Americans “Pro-Life” Than “Pro-Choice” for First Time Also, fewer think abortion should be legal “under any circumstances” PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll, conducted May 7-10, finds 51% of Americans calling themselves "pro-life" on the issue of abortion and 42% "pro-choice." This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995. (full story)----------------------------------------------------- Well that certianly is interesting. You get a pro-choise president and bam, the country turns pro-life. Quite the opposite of what one would expect.

Though I'm strongly prolife myself, I think this is one of those topics where most people have mixed feelings either way, or are completely ignorant on the subject all together. For example, most people I know in real life who support Pro-choice seem largely ignorant of the subject and it's issues that precede the decisions for the abortions. Most of the people my own age or younger that I know aren't even aware of what being Prolife or Prochoice means; when I've talked with them about the subject, they look at me like I've dropped from out Outer space in front of their eyes. On the other hand, most people I know that are Prolife (largely from church and in my neighborhood) are concerned only with the life of the unborn children, but do not comprehend fully the motivations that drive women to have abortions. The motivations are many, and cannot simply be boiled down to just the life of the mother and the child (no matter what my parents may say.) Ignorance and fear have taken their toll on both groups. This is one of those subjects where it is best to tread lightly and respect the views of the other.

funny you can say exactly the same thing about people that are pro life
the most blatant hypocrisy is that the hard core pro lifers are also pro death penalty
we all know this is a religion&faith thing there is no debate about it for most people just pain in the ass for the judges
the "prolife" stance is not really life at all - its about control

What I don't get is people seem to think that pro-choice means people think people should have abortions just because they feel like it, to me it means I believe people should be able to make the choice, to keep a baby or to have an abortion. I wouldn't imagine abortion is an ideal in any situation but there are situations (and I don't mean when people use it because they don't bother with contraception and that sort of thing) where it is needed; situations where it could be detrimental to the health of the mother, either physically or mentally, and in cases where the mother has been raped, those kind of things.

the most blatant hypocrisy is that the hard core pro lifers are also pro death penalty As opposed to being pro-aborting-after-the-first trimester and pro-terrorists rights. So, when it's a question of weather we should terminate a 5 month old innocent fetus, that could potentially be born and live, it's a yes for 'terminate'.. But when it's a question of weather we should go after terrorists willing to destroy western civilization.. or even a question of dunking them in the water, to get info to save lives, then it's a no. It's about preserving life. You know, not aborting saves the life of that human being as you can imagine. To recap the far-left stance: Potential innocent life taken away even after the 3rd month? Yes. Going after guilty terrorists? No. Making guilty terrorists uncomfortable, in order to save lives? No.

pro choice - not pro aborting
a fetus is not a human being so the word innocent does not apply to it
it does not because a fetus is not alive

This was one of the discussion topics on the McLaughlin group today (hey I don't have cable tv so it's either that or Mexican music videos), and a consensus was reached that the aging population often changes their view once they get older after having children and grandchildren. Even the woman from Roe v. Wade changed her mind and became a pro-life activist when she was older.

Of course a fetus is alive - but MrNice I agree its not a person. It gradually becomes one, and one of the problems is there is no line dividing person and non-person, while it seems to me many people would like there to be one.
Pro-life.. just a term made up to make religious mania seem more reasonable.

pro choice - not pro aborting Let's not play semantics. Would you rather I tease you and call it pro-death? Come on now.. Guilty does, because you're for 'termination' of it. It is innocent, until.. until he or she is able to prove otherwise in a decade or two, if one's so inclined. I'm not following the logic. Let's see: A fetus is not aborted and is born as a baby boy, for example. Birth mortality rate is low nowdays. And who knows? Maybe it could turn out to be someone who's going to turn out important to the world. Thererfore every fetus that's not aborted has a high probability of 'growing up'. So, if you don't terminate it, it's going to have a life. It's a tough issue. My problem is with late term abortions. They're done to protect woman's health. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of abuse here - taking the word health with a very broad stroak - in order to justify late term abortions. Ironicly, late term abortions have been known to have adverse effects on a lot of woman's mental state, even causing physical pain.

you are the one playing semantics by saying pro abortion if you don't want to play semantics then don't - call it what it is - pro choice
no - neither guilty nor innocent apply because a fetus is not a person
what does this have to do with the person being important? they can be important in a good way or in a bad way
and if you terminate it its not going to turn into a human being and grow up so? its not conscious and its not alive in a way that a human being is
as far as I see it, unwanted children is the problem here I am pretty sure women do not enjoy going through an abortion however it would seem that the future mother would know best
these are rare
you need to specify some numbers to justify the 'a lot of abuse' part otherwise its just an empty claim
there doesn't seem to be a lot of abuse here to me

warning my opinion is kinda inflamitry and contradictive but its my opinion none the less....
i think the world is way too overpopulated and i think this world is full of suffering. To raise a child you need to do a lot to prepare them for that most impotantly you need to love them. and really terminating a child who you know will grow up to have terrible life because of whatever reasons isn't a cruel thing. it isn't murder.
However i think that making that decision is really hard and although it isn't murder it would be something that would feel like murder. abortian isn't something girls do to get a kick out of life it's a hard decision but one that every woman shou;d have a right to. If there is the technology to do it then why not have it as an option. Women are perfectly capable of deciding what is the right thing to do for themselves .
