Winter has settled in so i rented some DVDs from the local Civic store and the one that stood out for me the most is "Hope Springs" starring Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep. It is a romantic comedy drama about a devoted middle age couple trying to salvage their marriage. I liked it due to the slow pace of the film and how they try to show needs of an older couple that rarely are shown in romantic movies. The fact that Steve Carrell can play a serious role was a bonus in this film. Eek...I know....i would be a terrible movie reviewer..... But yeah....I wouldn't mind watching this movie again. I linked the trailer below....and seriously there really wasn't that much sex related scenes in the film....they may have overemphasised it on the trailer....its more of an emotional journey...but don't take my word for it....feel free to watch it if you are interested

I don't have a lot to say about it - it's a cop buddy comedy with lots of guns and lots of cursing, and Melissa McCarthy is great in delivering her lines. I enjoyed it.

Just saw Pacific Rim. Hard to imagine any movie outdoing it in the over-the-top-giant-robots-battling-monster-aliens-guns-swords-explosions-fighting-special-FX dept. Plus it's got Stringer Bell (even though he's not Stringer Bell). So I'd say a pretty solid 11 out of 10.

The World's End
Managed to get to the picturehouse for a birthday treat on Saturday, and what a treat. The third in the Wright/Pegg/Frost trilogy, starting with Shaun of the Dead, then Hot Fuzz, and now this. I think I went in to see this final installment with a tinge of sadness because I knew this is the last one. I think if you go and see it, try not to think like that. Just enjoy it.
It's noticeably different from the other two. A lot darker in tone and that's considering this is a trilogy that including zombies. Don't know how they managed that. I think the overarching theme is quite all-consuming. It just gets to the heart of what it is to be human and the changes a life involves. It's a lot more serious and dramatic at this than the other two but like the other two, it's silly at the stuff you'd expect to be serious.
It started slow but the second any doubt creeps into your mind that it may stay that way, it kicks into gear. It really clicks at that point. It's a colossal step up from the previous movies. The budget is noticeably bigger, the fight sequences noticeably more serious and lacking humour (to a degree) until later on. I think the humour lies within their locations. It's not as laugh out loud funny as the other two, it's much more subtle but the humour means so much more. It has more depth to it. It'll really resonate with some people and will be an interesting look at life for the others.
The swearing is in your face constantly, and it is very heavy in places. The role reversals in the film work well for Pegg but Frost feels held back until later on. The CGI does take it out of the world of the previous two, a little bit. But I think it works. It does come together. It's a special finale.
There are some really dark moments in this movie, and the ending is incredibly bleak. I think it does work as a final installment, though. It's a good way to go. I think it'll take a few watches to become as much of a classic as the other two but don't let that take anything away from what it is. A very good movie. Really worth watching and a very interesting watch at that.
Although it does sound similar to Shaun of the Dead the threat in this feels a lot more real and a lot more ominous. The peril feels real. There's a lot more drama than obvious humor. I'd give it a solid 10/10 like with the other two. They are all very different movies, it's important to remember.
I enjoyed The World's End. Certainly one to see.

saw wolverine and it wasn't half bad. it had a strong asian influence. probably full of stereotypes, i'm sure...you know, the inscrutable asian gangster types who probably only exist in american screenwriters' imaginations...but anyway, it was entertaining. i love these marvel comics adaptations.

Thor : The Dark World So much awesomeness. I believe I enjoyed this more than the previous Thor. Lot's of action and plenty of humour too.

The Troll Hunter, suprisingly good film, I hadn't any expectations before I saw this film and I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. I particularly liked that for a found footage film they didn't try to make it into a horror film which would have ruined the story I think.

I think the last movies I went to see at the cinema were Man of Steel and Thor 2: The Dark World. I enjoyed both, surprisingly so in the case of the Superman re-re-boot. My expectations weren't that high, and though the fight sequence towards the end seemed unnecessarily drawn out, I found Henry Cavill to be a fine Superman. Although when he took his top off I did feel the sudden (not at all homoerotic) urge to pump some iron. Ahem....
Come to think of it I encountered the same feelings watching Thor. Oh dear.
The last film I watched at home was World War Z. I read the book a while back and enjoyed that, though I knew the film had next to nothing in common with it. Apart from the whole zombie apocalypse thing. The film was good! An achievement in itself considering I have an aversion to anything with Brad Pitt in it. Aside from Fight Club. Where he takes his top off too. Oh dear #2.
I'm off to look at pictures of women just to make sure. And take a long hard look at myself.
Yes. Because that doesn't sound wrong at all....
