Shane’s Marathon Diary 4th April –11th April
Friday 4th April Gym this morning. I’m still working on building up my stamina. Six mile run on a running machine followed by half and hour on a rowing machine and half an hour on the bike. The gym is very warm today. I end up sweating like a pig. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I’m going for a long run from Drum Bridge to the new Laganside Complex. Along the towpath it’s around 5 mile out and the same again back.
Saturday 5th April The run went brilliantly. The heat made it tough going. The temperature was touching 18 degrees. It was hotter than the gym. It’s a beautiful place to run. The Grand National was on at the same time so it was almost deserted. I left my bottle of water in the boot so I stopped at Laganside and bought one out of the machine. The girl at the Reception desk diddled me. I asked her for change from a £5 note for the machine. She only gave me change of a pound. I didn’t realise till I got home. Can’t do that again.
Sunday 6th April Rest Day. Legs a bit sore. Nipples red raw. I’ll have to buy some Petrolatum jelly. Jogger’s nipple can be nasty. Only 28 days until Marathon Day. Got my stingy cousin to sponsor me. The look on his face after he signed his name was classic. He’s promised to go out on Saturday with me for another big run. I’ll believe it when I see it!
Monday 7th April Feeling great this morning. Legs fine. Nipples great. Easy enough day in the gym. Six miles on the running machine and a bit of warming up and down and that was it. Running on those machines gets very boring very quickly. Forget to buy Petroleum jelly. Nipples on fire. Had to throw copious bottles of water down my top.

Has anybody checked our Moogles Weblog. It really is excellent stuff. I've put a link to it (thanks Moogle) on the main SHY United site in our 'SHY Diaries' section.

Hello all, sorry I've been a bit quiet post wise over the last couple of days. I had a support group meeting for our HD association last night. A lot of good stuff came out of it and as I look after the Northern Ireland HDA website I have been working away on that trying to keep it up to date.
Don't forget we have informal chats in our SHY United cahtroom at 8pm UK time tonight, tomorrow and sunday.
If you cajn make it that would be great

I found that there was very little balance in my life until my third and final year in uni. Up until then, like you, I was crazy about soccer and played it literally 7 days a week. My whole life revolved around it. When I stopped playing I found that there was not much left in my life. I had a couple of hard years in uni were I was pretty lonely. I had never had a girlfriend up until that point. I didn't socialise.
Thankfully in my third year I found the joys of drink and women.

I remember that Jan de Fries, one of the top alternative therapists, reccommends it for depression and anxiety. Jan has a column in a paper over here in the UK. I am always pretty sceptical about taking these kinds of herbal remedies. A lot of the time they are just in fashion. I took Kalms a few years ago and they did absolutely nothing for me. It's possible that they do work for some people. I think that you can't beat prescribed anti-depressants. The current batch not only alleviates depression but eases things like anxiety and stress. I am on Lustral. Herbs may be ancient but I prefer my tablets to work more scientifically.

Hello everybody. I hope you are all keeping well. As most of you know by now I'm running the Belfast Marathon on 5th May for Huntington's Disease (HD). HD is a cross between Parkinson's, Motor Neuron's and MS. It is an incurable,, genetic, herieditary illiness.
HD runs in my family. My father, my brother and I all have it. I was diagnosed with HD when I was 23. I was married and on my way to being a journalist.
HD changed everything. I seperated from my wife and all hopes of a decent career evapourated. I ended up having a breakdown and tried to commit suicide.
That all happened last May. I have done many positive things since then. I set up a HD website and I set up SHY United.
This May I decided to do something far more positive: run the Belfast marathon with all the money raised going to HD research. It is not for my benefit but for the benifit of the thousand's of others out there.
If anybody who checks out these posts on our Forum would like me to email them a sponsorship form please send me an email at the adress at the bottom of this post and I will email them a sponsor form.
Any currency is ok. Dollars, pounds etc. It's only a matter of getting it changed at my end. Please return all sponsorship forms and money before the 1st May.
Please give as little or as much as you wish.
Nobody should feel under any obligation to sponsor me.

Thank you.

I've just come across another review of our site. This one is in 'SuOnline.net.' The only problem is that it's in a foreign lingo. Anybody know what it says? I've only just mastered English. Good news and bad news! Our site has just been reviewed by Netsurfer Digest Ezine. Thats the good news. The bad news is that I don't know what they said about us except for the first couple of lines.
Netsurfer change an annual subscription rate of £20 dollars which is ridiculous. I emailed them yesterday to see if they would let us have a free copy of the review for the site but there has been no word back yet.
On the off chance, does anybody subscribe to Netsurf Digest.?
The first couple of lines sounded good. They compared our site to a lovely soothing cup of chamomile tea.
Ahh well, hopefully I will get a reply from them,
Shane

Well, its done, at last. The Forum colour have changed one final time. As you can see, they are based on a simple enough to read white text on a green background.
Let me know what you think Shane

I have to say from the start of this post that us Irish lads don't have any vices! If you believe that you'll believe anything. I was going about like a zombie for a few weeks when I started to train for my marathon. I love my coffee, chocolate, drink and every other nasty thing out there. I think my body actually went cold turkey for a while. I still am partial to all these things but I've had to cut right down. Instaed of having 20 cups of coffee a day I now only have one. Instead of eating a box of sweets I just have 2. I can't wait for the big day to come and go!
I used to be adddicted to Championship Manager for the PC a couple of years ago but a course of ECT soon snapped that out of me.

Building up your confidence in talking to people is something you should definitely look at. Follow the great advice above. Don't try to overwhelm yourself too early.
Talk about a book you are reading for a class with the person next to you. Talk about the weather and gradually build from there.
Joining an online community such as this one is great but you may also like to join something in the 'real' world. What sort of thing you join depends on your interests. It may be a soccer team or a book club. Join something that you have a passion for and that passion will shine through. I'm talking from experience here. I am shy yet on a soccer pitch I scream my head of like a demon!
